Our Parish Community

** Feast of the Assumption of the BVM – Potluck Supper: Tuesday, 15 August, we celebrate the Feast of the Assumtion with a 6.00 pm Procession & Solemn Mass, followed by a pot-luck supper. As always we need help with set-up and clean-up: At least 2 more people willing to come before the start of the service to help with set-up (tables and chairs, taking delivery of early-arriving foods), and a few people to stay for clean-up (washing up, dealing with any leftover food). We also need food! Please bring your food ready-plated, and afterwards take your dishes home to wash – it makes clean-up much faster! If you are able to help, please let the Hospitality Team know as soon as possible (Lynn Singer & Viola Lang – hospitality@stmarymagdalene.ca). Please help out if you can; this kind of event depends so much on your generous and cheerful selves.

Prayer Shawls: Summer has arrived, the perfect time to pull out those needles and crochet hooks to start making Prayer Shawls! Just think how wonderfully relaxed you’ll be as you sit in the shade of your favourite outdoor space prayerfully bringing into being a warm hug for someone in need. Wouldn’t it be great to set aside a few minutes each day to get in touch with your most prayerful self? Speak to Lynn Singer or email her at the Hospitality email address (hospitality@stmarymagdalene.ca) regarding yarn. She has quite a selection of colours to choose from. The funds to provide the yarn are donated, so if you are not a maker please consider a donation to this wonderful ministry. Or if you know someone who is looking to become part of this ministry, please let them know and we will be happy to have them join our SMM group!

Young people are an important part of our community! Our appeal in support of Children and Youth ministries is on now. Would you please consider making a special donation?

SMM Singers: All are welcome to join the SMM Singers in their musical offering at the 9.30 am Sung Eucharist. We rehearse at 9.00 am every Sunday morning and are always delighted to welcome new voices and instrumentalists.

Flowers: There are still lots of Sundays when we need flowers for the church! If you are interested in giving flowers, please fill out one of the forms under the roster in Hiscocks Hall, and either put it in the offering plate, or return it to Carolyn McIntire Smyth or to the Parish Office.

We’re looking for teams to help out with the coffee hours on Sundays. We would like to arrange for 4 or more groups to handle the 2 coffee hours every Sunday. If you would like to be part of a team of people (2–4) to set up and clean up please speak to a member of the Hospitality Committee. There would be help in learning the ropes! And the “old hands” would be around on a regular basis. Please give this your utmost consideration. This is a wonderful way to meet your fellow parishioners and to serve in a meaningful way in our community. For more information, email hospitality@stmarymagdalene.ca. There is also a sign-up sheet beside the kitchen door – please make use of it!

Spiritual Growth for Children & Youth

** Volunteers needed to help draw a backdrop for our Rome decorations. Also we have obtained three wooden Roman style columns which need sanding and painting. Please contact Fr Bob if you can assist in the next couple of weeks: bettsonbob@gmail.com or 647.636.6233.

** Vacation Bible School Needs Your Help! Our children will be learning about St Paul and underground church in Rome. We are now accepting donations for the program: To decorate our space we need: Big floor pillows soft rugs, brassware, pottery, goblets, Roman posters, etc. We will take great care of these things and all will be returned after camp. We also need old bedsheets, pillowcases, or materials to make togas. Donations of food or small financial contributions will also be gratefully accepted: canned nuts, dried fruit, pita bread, crackers, etc. All items can be place under the table at the back of the church or given to Melisa Leyland or Alana McCord or brought in on 27 August. If you would like to go back in time with us there we can still use a volunteer or two. Please speak to Alana or Melisa for more information.

Faith@Home this summer: Remember the 3 “P” of Vacation. 1) Pray: Don’t forget to make time to pray. Prior to road trips pray for safety; if you see disruptions on the road or ambulances pass you by pray for those involved; pray for God to be with your child in the new experiences which summer sometimes brings. Say grace at meals, and if you are out of town, explore worshipping at another church. 2) Praise: Take time to enjoy the natural world and give praise for the bounty of the earth, be it the fruits of your garden, the flowers at the local park or new scenery on a vacation. Take time to count your blessings too! 3) Play: God commanded the Israelites to “Remember the Sabbath day, and keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8). Use this time to unplug and rest. Spend time with families and friends. Play and have fun!

Save the Date! Baseball in the Fall – Sunday, 17 September: SMM will be taking on our neighbouring parish St- Martin-in-the-Fields for an epic outdoor baseball game. Players and cheerleaders welcome. Food and drink will be provided. Stay tuned for more details.

Sunday School in the Summer: We will continue to offer Sunday school at SMM over the summer months. 9.30 am Sunday School will run every week except for Sunday, 3 September, (the long weekends). 11.00 am Sunday School will run on 20 and 27 August, and start up again on 10 September.
