Schola Magdalena is a six-voice women’s group dedicated to exploring chant and other medieval music, as well as modern music for women’s voices. Led by its artistic director Stephanie Martin, it is Ensemble-in-Residence at St Mary Magdalene’s.
Since 2007, Schola Magdalena has performed in several venues throughout Ontario and Quebec. Past engagements have included appearances at Scotiabank Nuit Blanche and Barrie’s Colours of Music festival. In February 2013, Schola Magdalena was a featured performer at NUMUS Concerts, one of Canada’s foremost New Music series.
The group’s debut recording, “O Gracious Light” (2009), had an extraordinary reception. John Terauds of The Toronto Star wrote that it “is a treat from beginning to end” and “makes the roll and rhythm of plainsong sound as natural as breathing.” Their second CD, “Virgo Splendens” (2011) features a rich array of chant and polyphony dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
In July 2010, the ensemble filmed a music video for BRAVO! featuring “Alleluia,” a composition by Stephanie Martin, from “O Gracious Light”. You can watch it here.
