An organ recital in progress: part 88

Dear SMM Community,

The next part of my online organ recital is here, and I hope that you enjoy it. I offer up these musical meditations as part of our parish efforts to find ways to keep you connected at this time. Recorded on my house organ, the instrument is a musical facsimile of the great 'Father' Willis organ at Salisbury Cathedral.

Today, I present Craig Sellar Lang's Fanfare.

Born in New Zealand, Craig Sellar Lang (1891-1971) was educated in England and studied at the Royal College of Music with Sir Charles Villiers Stanford. Though best-remembered for his Tuba tune, Lang wrote a number of choral works as well in addition to his Fanfare (published in 1961).

With best wishes,
Andrew Adair
Director of Music

An organ recital in progress: part 87

Dear SMM Community,

The next part of my online organ recital is here, and I hope that you enjoy it. I offer up these musical meditations as part of our parish efforts to find ways to keep you connected at this time. Recorded on my house organ, the instrument is a musical facsimile of the great 'Father' Willis organ at Salisbury Cathedral.

Today, I present Gabriel Fauré's Pavane.

French composer, organist, pianist, and teacher Gabriel Urbain Fauré (1845-1924) became one of the leading French composers of his era, and his music had a lasting influence on 20th century composition. Written in 1887, his Pavane, Op. 50, was originally written for the orchestra; Fauré published a piano version two years later, and the work became one of his most popular compositions.

With best wishes,
Andrew Adair
Director of Music

Today, I present Olivier Messiaen's Apparition de l'église éternelle.

The music of Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) is strongly rooted in his deep Roman Catholic faith, a foundation on which Messiaen crafted and informed his art. His Apparition de l'église éternelle, written in 1932, paints a bold vision of the eternal Church. Messiaen described the work as an ‘enormous and granite-like crescendo. The Church comes into sight and recedes. The pedals mark the hammer-blows of the Grace that builds the divine edifice’.

With best wishes,
Andrew Adair
Director of Music
