An organ recital in progress: part 104

Dear SMM Community,

The next part of my online organ recital is here, and I hope that you enjoy it. I offer up these musical meditations as part of our parish efforts to find ways to keep you connected at this time. Recorded on my house organ, the instrument is a musical facsimile of the great 'Father' Willis organ at Salisbury Cathedral.

Today, I present Sigfrid Karg-Elert’s Nun danket alle Gott.

Sigfrid Karg-Elert (1877-1933) was born as Siegfried Theodor Karg at Oberndorf am Neckar in Germany. Though somewhat popular during his lifetime, his music drifted into obscurity after his death until a revival of interest in the 1970’s.

Karg-Elert’s Nun danket alle Gott comes from his collection of 66 chorale improvisations for organ, Op. 65. Composed between 1906 and 1908, the collection is dedicated to Alexandre Guilmant.

With best wishes,
Andrew Adair
Director of Music

September 30, 2021 marks the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day honours the lost children and Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process. Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day take place on September 30. Orange Shirt Day is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day that honours the children who survived residential schools and remembers those who did not. This day relates to the experience of Phyllis Webstad, a Northern Secwepemc (Shuswap) from the Stswecem'c Xgat'tem First Nation, on her first day of school, where she arrived dressed in a new orange shirt, which was taken from her. It is now a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations.

An organ recital in progress: part 103

Dear SMM Community,

The next part of my online organ recital is here, and I hope that you enjoy it. I offer up these musical meditations as part of our parish efforts to find ways to keep you connected at this time. Recorded on my house organ, the instrument is a musical facsimile of the great 'Father' Willis organ at Salisbury Cathedral.

Today, I present Tielman Susato's Mohrentanz.

The composer, instrumentalist, and music publisher Tielman Susato (c.1510/15-after 1570) worked in Antwerp for most of his life. His lively dance-tune Mohrentanz was not originally composed for the organ, but it suits the instrument rather well, showcasing the fiery reed stops.

With best wishes,
Andrew Adair
Director of Music
